Easter has arrived at Porth Sands
Easter is here at Porth Sands!

Ever noticed how life has a habit of whizzing by at an alarming rate while we're all busy updating our social media and responding to that terribly urgent email from Sharon in accounts? Well, dear reader, Spring time presents the perfect opportunity to press pause on the madness and remember what it's like to actually live in the moment.

Why Easter's More Special Than Your Average Bank Holiday

Let's be honest - Easter is a bit of a beautiful mixing pot, isn't it? It's like several celebrations had a rather enthusiastic party and decided to merge into one gloriously confused holiday. Consider the evidence:

  • It's the heavyweight champion of Christian festivals (Christmas may have the fairy lights, but Easter packs the theological punch)

  • We get not one, but multiple bank holidays (a gift that keeps on giving)

  • Creation puts on her finest spring fashion show

  • It's the only time of year when having chocolate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is considered perfectly reasonable behaviour

But How is Easter celebrated around the world I hear you ask?

Well may be not but I need a neat way to segway into this subject. Don’t want to waste all the research time so it’s very kind of you to ask, even if you didn’t really.………

Traditional Easter celebrations span the globe with fascinating customs that make this spring holiday truly special. Let's hop around the world before discovering why picturesque Porth in Cornwall offers the perfect Easter getaway!

·        European Easter Traditions: Sweden: Children dress as Easter witches, going door-to-door trading artwork for sweets. Greece: Red-dyed eggs symbolise Christ's blood, with families competing in egg-cracking games. Florence, Italy: The spectacular 'Scoppio del Carro' features a mechanical dove igniting fireworks

·        Down Under Celebrations The Easter Bilby, rather than the Easter Bunny, delivers chocolate treats in Australia, highlighting their conservation efforts for native wildlife.

·        Latin American Passion Vibrant processions and elaborate street carpets made from coloured sawdust transform cities like Antigua, Guatemala. While perhaps not quite as tropical, Swanage's Victorian pier and heritage railway offer equally Instagram-worthy Easter photo opportunities!

So how are you celebrating this Easter?

If you're feeling the need to escape the digital deluge, then let’s do something about it, let’s make some executive decisions!

So if the weather is being kind this Easter, should the sun decide to make an appearance (and yes, it does happen occasionally) let’s head to the beach, even better head to Porth Beach:

  • Take a proper old-fashioned beach walk - shoes off, trousers rolled up, complete with the mandatory sharp intake of breath when the water touches your toes

  • Treat yourself to a proper seaside ice cream, we're talking the works here: flake, sprinkles, and that mysterious sauce that only seems to exist at British seaside’s

  • Build a sandcastle that would make Grand Designs proud (or at least try)

  • Organise a family Easter egg hunt on the beach.

  • Return home, turn off the digital noise and eat a meal with those you love, maybe even grab some fish and chips to really make it feel really British.

When the Weather's Being... British

Let's be realistic,  this is England in spring. Sometimes the weather requires different activities:

  • Put the wellies on and just go and jump in the puddles, don’t worry what people think, they will be jealous. Hear the belly laughs of your family.

  • Make a mud castle instead of a sand castle, same rules as above. Does it really matter if you get wet and muddy?

  • Make some Hot chocolate, that makes ordinary hot chocolate hang it’s head in shame, you will need the best; order Chococo Hot Chocolate Flakes from Swanage, they are up there. Get the marshmallows, the full works!

  • As it’s Easter let’s get the chocolate fondue afternoon tea organised, make an experience that makes you wonder why all afternoon teas aren't chocolate-based. Your family will love you!

The Bottom Line

In a world where we're constantly connected, constantly busy, and constantly trying to capture the perfect moment for social media, Springtime and Easter offers us the perfect excuse to just... stop. So if you haven’t already, book your spring stay at Porth Sands, with its endless sandy beach and gentle pace, it provides the ideal setting for remembering what life was like before we all became amateur photographers/social media managers/24-7 email responders. It’s a time to chill, spiritually centre, and marvel at what a wonderful creation this world we have been gifted is.

So pop on your comfy shoes, grab a good book (yes, a proper paper one), and don't forget to throw in some emergency chocolate. This Springtime rediscover the joy of doing absolutely nothing in particular, but doing it very well indeed.

P.S. If anyone from work asks, there's no mobile reception in Porth. That's not strictly true, but they don't need to know that, do they?

How are we celebrating Easter this year?

We will be turning the phones off, popping to church, having family round and eating a meal together. Our 18month granddaughter has only just discovered chocolate, so we will be enjoying an Easter egg hunt in the garden, hopefully there will be some sunshine during the day. And just maybe there will be enough chocolate for the adults!

From all at Six Porth Sands we want to wish you a very Happy Easter, happy planning, get sandy, get muddy, have fun and we hope to see you soon!
